Greek Baklava Cake

This Greek desert will make your mouth water. More of a sweet, the Mema’s Baklava is a favorite for Christmas.

There is nothing better that sweets and cakes at Christmas time and here are few of our family recipes we’d like to share with you.

The Baklava

  • 1 pound of chopped nuts, mixed, including almonds, walnuts, and pistachios
  • 1 pound of phyllo dough
  • 1 cup of butter, melted
  • 1/3 cup of sugar
  • 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon
  • 1/3 teaspoon of ground cloves

The Glaze

  • 1 cup of water
  • 1 cup of sugar
  • ½ cup of honey
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1 to 2 cinnamon sticks

Lightly grease a 9×13 pan and preheat the oven to 350 degrees.

Ground the nuts into small pieces – a coffee grinder works perfectly for this set on coarse – and mix together with the sugar, cinnamon and cloves. Melt the butter in a microwave bowl and using thawed phyllo dough, roll out the dough and cut it in pieces to fit the pan. Keep the dough moist at all times by keeping a damp cloth over it. Lay a piece of dough in the pan, brush with melted butter and repeat 7 more times.

Spoon an even layer of nuts over the dough and repeat with 2 sheets in between each layer of nuts, and 8 on the top. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes until golden brown, then let cool. Cut until 24 equal pieces.

While this baklava is baking make the glaze by combining the glaze ingredients in a pot, bringing it a boil, then allowing it to simmer until it thickens. Let it cool slightly and then pour it over the hot baklava. Cool for 4 hours, and then serve.
