During Christmas, movie theaters and TV channels run special movies with Christmas as background.
Since cinema is audio-visual entertainment, it combines in it the power of words and the power of visual medium. Now that TV and computer games have jumped into the audio-visual arena, cinema can no longer retain its crown as the primary form of entertainment. Still, a movie is highly entertaining and provides an excellent analysis of human nature and social values.

Christmas movies are designed to convey the universal message of Christmas and the varying traditions of celebrating Christmas. Miracles and Santa Claus are common themes in Christmas movies, and many hilarious comedies have been made using the Christmas theme. Since Christmas movies have been made by film makers of different countries, these movies have also captured the cultural nuances of various communities.

It’s a Wonderful Life

This is a 1946 Frank Capra film based on Philip Van Doren Stern’s 1939 short story by the name ‘The Greatest Gift’. It is the story of a young couple, each of whom sells their most precious possession to be able to give a Christmas gift to the other. Ironically, their presents become unusable, but the situation makes them realize how much they love each other. It is an all time favorite Christmas movie.

Miracle on 34th Street

‘Miracle on 34th Street’ is a 1947 movie written and directed by George Seaton. The movie has a complicated plot, with a store Santa Claus affirming to customers that he is not wearing a costume and is the real Santa Claus. Because of the many miracles in the movie, and the major role that Santa Claus plays in it, it still continues to be a Christmas favorite.

White Christmas

A 1954 musical, ‘White Christmas’ contains lots of song and dance and romantic mix-ups. There is action throughout and the lead roles are played by Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye. The story takes place during the period just after the Second World War.

Elf

‘Elf’ is comparatively recent, having been released in 2003. It is the humorous story of a boy who accidentally ends up in Santa Claus’s gift sac and thus reaches the North Pole with him and is raised by one of his elves. The story is full of action and people love to watch it during Christmas.

Santa Claus

‘The Santa Clause’, made in 1994, is a popular comedy film. It had two sequels named ‘The Santa Clause 2’ and ‘The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause’, made in 2002 and 2006 respectively. ‘The Nightmare before Christmas’, ‘The Bishop’s Wife’, ‘Bad Santa’, ‘Home Alone’, ‘The Polar Express’, and ‘A Christmas carol’, which is the film version of Charles Dickens’s famous novel of the same name, are some of the other movies that continue be Christmas favorites.
