How to make your own small Christmas tree

Tiny Christmas treeSmall Christmas trees make wonderful Christmas gifts for anyone and to make your own Christmas tree in any size you want and color co-ordinate it in any way you please can give deep satisfaction. If you are giving it to a person using decorations and colors meant especially for them then the gift becomes all the more special. The best part is that these trees can be decorated in as many (or even more) ways as the standard trees. Since all the materials required for making such a tree can be found at the local craft store you do not need to feel restricted. Here are some ideas that you can use.

A few suggestions

  1. You need a Styrofoam base for the tree along with a Styrofoam cone, some gold and silver spray paint, Christmas lights (battery operated) and some other odds and ends to make a customized Christmas tree.
  2. To begin, cut a hole in the centre of the base for a battery operated lights pack. Make sure that the hole is a tad smaller than the pack so that it can be squeezed in and fits tightly.
  3. Attach the cone to the base with the help of a glue gun and pins. It does not matter if the pins show a little since they can be later covered up with decorations.
  4. Spray paint the tree and let it dry overnight. Now you can decorate the tree as you want starting with the largest ornaments or branches and secure each attachment with the help of either glue or pins. Remember to wrap the lights around the tree as you go along.
  5. To finish, add smaller decorations on top of branches or to cover gaping holes. Silk flowers add that extra bit of style to a hand made tree; put them right on the cone or on top of branches.

Do’s

  • You can further customize the tree by adding tiny soft toys as decorations if the tree is for a baby or small sports equipment ornaments if the gift is meant for a sport enthusiast.

Don’ts

  • Don’t use the glue gun around small children.
  • It is a craft that involves really small parts, so be extra careful if there are toddlers around.

I am looking for a pattern of how to make a christmas tree starting with a sterofoam cone, measuring and cutting netting and gathering around the cone, starting at the bottom and going to the top, glue at edges of netting and sprinkle with glitter, etc., placing very small ornaments about and puttin one of top. I used to make these for shut-ins, taking them to nursing homes, but I can’t remember how to make them and I don’t have the patience to figure it out. I think I got the pattern from the church as a teenager. I think the time era was mid 60’s and even the 70’s. There are so many single older people who could really use some chearing up at Christmas and I thought now that I am retired, I might be able to help some of them. Please see what you can do. I would really appreciate it. Thanks, Sandie
