How to make festive candle holders

Christmas candle star holderTo make festive candle holders for Christmas, can be a lot of fun, especially if the whole family is involved. Not only are these candle holders pretty to look at but they also make good gifts if they are filled with candies and the tops are tied with raffia and a ribbon. Since they are absolutely home made there is a degree of satisfaction also in using them or gifting them out. There are innumerable ways of making candle holders using different materials, the only ingredient required is a fertile imagination. Here are some tips to get you started.

A few suggestions

  1. Take some discarded baby food jars or glass jelly jars. Some other things that you will need include white glue, yellow and orange and tissue paper, a black permanent marker and some decorating ribbons, lace and trinkets.
  2. Tear the tissue papers into small bits. Thin the glue with some water and paint the outside of the jar with it till it is fully covered. Now stick the torn pieces of tissue on the jar (both orange and yellow - for the realistic touch) until the jar is totally covered, at least three layers deep.
  3. Leave to dry overnight and when the jar is completely dry using the marker sketch eyes, nose and mouth on the jar to give it a jack-o-lantern look. Instead of marking the eyes etc. you can also cut out triangular pieces of yellow tissue to make the different features of the pumpkin face.
  4. Put a small tea light in the jar. The light will shine through the jar and give your handiwork an ethereal look.

Do’s

  • Tear the tissue paper to stick on the jar; do not chop it using scissors. This is to make the whole effect more realistic.

Don’ts

  • Do not leave a lighted candle unattended inside the jar, ever.
