Christmas Cheer
A few years ago I discovered a novel way to buy my Christmas gifts and also enjoy a family holiday at the same time! A friend of the family had suggested that we come and visit them in Germany, and as I had always meant to travel in Europe with my children, I seized the chance.
The only problem was, or so I thought, that I could only feasibly take holidays in winter, and I couldn't imagine myself warming to the possibility of trudging around Europe in minus temperatures and possibly even through snow! I know the song goes something about dreaming of a White Christmas, but that wasn't something I aspired to… but then again, you have to experience it to believe it!
Off we all went to Cologne in December, quite excited about the trip, but not really knowing what to expect. Low and behold, Cologne is the site of some of Europe's most famous Christmas markets, and we were fascinated by all the goings on when it came to celebrating a traditional European Christmas!
Hosted at several sites around town, the Cologne markets vary from the commercial to the cherished handicrafts, from the central cathedral markets to a very quaint medieval market that's just a little bit off the beaten track. At each and every one, however, you're able to indulge in festival fare and put a little fire in your belly with a steaming hot mug of mulled wine. In Germany, they call it glühwein, and it's a spiced red wine served warm, and often with honey, orange zest, and even vanilla pods. Apparently, in the Scandinavian version of this seasonal beverage, almonds and raisins are often added, which sounds absolutely scrumptious!
Something that caught my eye at the Christmas markets was not only that they were a great way to ward off the cold and pass a few hours browsing or ice-skating on the public rinks, but also that they provided a great opportunity to stock up on Christmas gifts, festive fancy dress and decorations, party supplies, home handcrafts, and a whole lot more! I was able to pick up some really special Christmas presents for other members of my family and close friends, and it just made that extra difference with that care and attention that comes with traditional Christmas gifts. It's not just run-of-the-mill Santa hats on offer, but really one-of-a-kind Christmas costumes, party decorations, and gift ideas, especially those that relate to regional Christmas rituals and practises associated with Christmas. If you get the chance to visit the Christmas markets of Europe with your children, especially to pick up a great range of costumes for children, I thoroughly recommend it!
